MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is exactly what it sounds like: an exfoliant made from volcanic ash. But wait, there's more! This ash comes from live volcanoes on Vanuatu - yes, that Vanuatu - the one made famous in Survivor. Nice.
I have to admit, I'm a bit weirded out by this. It is black and gritty. Now, of course, most exfoliants are gritty - they include those little scrubby things. This exfoliant is made of ash (which contains sulfur, wow and ick) and sugar crystals. This stuff is pungent. It's not funky, or anything, but it smells ... earthy is the best word for it, I guess. It smells like what I think a rainforest would smell like. Now, keep in mind, I have never been to an actual rainforest, so I have no frame of reference - this is just what I would imagine a rainforest smells like. I do have a very active imagination, for what it's worth. Anyway, I am happy to have pungent, earthy, famous ash on my face, I guess. However, I did freak myself out when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I looked like I was putting on blackface paint or something. It was bizarre.
Having said all that, though, this stuff does work. My face felt like a baby's butt afterward - very, very soft and smooth. So, if you can get past the smell and the weirdness, you'll be pleased with the results, I think.
MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and the rest of the Future Earth collection is available this month.

Wow! This product seems so innovative! I bet the sulfur in this exfoliant is also good for helping to keep skin clear. Have you used MAC Microfine Refinisher, and if so, how does this compare? I like the Microfine Refinisher a lot, but am out at the moment :)

This sounds like an interesting product. I've used MAC makeup before. I have been using a natural powder make up for some time now because it's so very light. I also use Dead Sea Mineral products because they are great for smoothing out dry patches of skin over time.

Hi ebonykris!
Welcome! I hope you continue to be a regular visitor here. I don't know that the MAC Volcanic Ash will help with acne scarring or evening of your skintone, but it will definitely help make the texture of the skin smoother. If you decide to try it, let me know how you like it!
