You Look Marvelous!

I'm on BUST!

Avon/mark. review

I am so incredibly fortunate that my lovely friend, Yalonda, is an Avon/mark. representative!  As a younger girl, I became enamored with Avon because my grandmother would order from their catalogs - all the products seemed so glamorous to me back then.  Now, I'm falling in love with this company all over again - they're coming up with such fun, innovative products, at such fabulous price points.

Mark_caribbean_shine_lip_gloss The mark caribbean shine lip gloss is really cute and fun!  Look at it - it's like fabulous little tubes of sand art!  I got the peach shade "Soak in the Sun" and the bronzy shade "Walk in the Sand."  I expected that these would go on sheer, but it's not so.  They aren't slap in the face with the color by any means, but the gloss is very creamy on the lips.  I love them both, but particularly "Soak in the Sun."  At $6 a pop, you can afford to get all three, if you want!

Mark_kiss_therapy_lip_balm It's rare that I'm disappointed by Avon or mark, but in this case, I'm a bit disappointed.  The mark kiss therapy lip balm looks like it would be a good alternative to Rosebud Salve and its cohorts, but frankly, this balm pales by comparison.  It comes in great colors which actually add tint to the lips.  Unfortunately, it's sticky as all get out, which I can't stand and it really doesn't feel like balm on the lips at all.  I found that it doesn't relieve dryness much - it's like applying a thick, sticky gloss without moisturizing your lips first.  Not awesome.

Avon_smoldering_pastels_blush_duo I love the look of the Avon Smoldering Pastels Blush Duo.  It's quite a fab little blush.  The idea is that you use the darker outer circle as your blush color and use the light inner shade as a highlight.  That would be a good idea except that the bullseye formation of the blush makes it almost impossible to separate the two colors, at least if you're using the right size blush brush.  I tried to use them separately, but wound up mixing the colors inadvertently.  That wasn't too bad, though, since the resultant color was quite nice - bright enough to be seen on my brown skin, with a touch of glowiness from the highlight color.  Good job, Avon!  This blush is just $6.99 and it comes in the Coral Dream shade (which I got) and a more mauvey color.

You can purchase Avon/mark products on the Avon website or from your local Avon/mark representative.

NYX Round Lipstick

Nyx_round_lipstick Y'all!  I have found the best bargain lipstick in the world, thanks to Vanessa from Nessasarymakeup!

NYX Round Lipstick is a fabulous product!  It comes in dozens of marvelous colors, applies smooth and creamy and doesn't wear off quickly.  It's not that it knocks your socks off, it's just that it works beautifully and is the best price I have ever heard of.  Y'all ... these lipsticks are 99 cents.  No, I am not kidding.  99 cents, do you hear me????  I bought it in five colors: Hebe (which I'm wearing today), Chaos, B52, Galaxy, and Rea and I'll be going back for me.

NYX is one of those lines that you will frequently find in the beauty supply stores that run rampant in the 'hood.  The beauty store two doors down from where the NDC rehearses has a pretty good stock of NYX Cosmetics and I am making it my business to try at least one of each product.  This one kicks heinie.

You can find NYX Round Lipstick at your local neighborhood beauty supply store (if you live in the right neighborhood) or at www.cherryculture.com.

Avon Horizon Blush

Avon_horizon_blush This blush is supposedly made in two shades: Apricot Horizon and Pink Horizon, but, for some reason, only Apricot Horizon is available on site.  I actually thought I'd managed to get my hands on Pink Horizon (sorry, Muse!), because the blush quite obviously ranges from a light baby pink up to a more saturated strawberry pink - at least, that's the way it looks in the compact.  And, when I applied it to my face, it looked pink, too.  So, I'm confused.  If the Apricot Horizon is pink, what color is the Pink Horizon?

Color confusion notwithstanding, this is a good blush.  I like the way it looks - the compact is sleek and elegant, the ombre effect on the blush is way cool and it's cute to have Jillian Dempsey's signature on the mirror.  I like that the mirror is large enough for you to see your face when you apply the blush.  The tiny little included brush is useless, however, and should be tossed immediately.

I think it applies well and has lasted all day.  I put it on at about seven this morning and at almost three o'clock, it's still going strong!  Only the darker end of the blush works for me to add a good touch of pigment, however the lighter end is perfect as a highlighter, so I'm pleased.  Also, if I mix the two together, it gives me a muted effect that's pretty, as well.

This is a really fabulous product for the price.

You can buy Avon Horizon Blush on http://shop.avon.com or talk to your local Avon representative.  Unfortunately, it's only available in Apricot Horizon, though if what you're looking for is a saturated warm pink blush, this is the shade you need anyway.  I wonder where the elusive Pink Horizon shade is?  If Avon is trying to make folks clamor for a product, this is the way to do it.  Make it hard to get and everyone will want it!

Avon Horizon Blush retails for $7.99.

Avon superSHOCK Mascara

Avon_supershock_mascara For the past few days, I've been wearing Avon's new superShock Mascara in Black.  It's a great mascara, comparable, in my opinion, to Cover Girl's Lash Blast, and that's saying a lot since Lash Blast is one of my new faves.  The eyes make a lot of difference in a woman's look and when I don't have a lot of time to apply make-up, I make my eyes look dramatic by applying a nice liner and a great mascara.  superShock mascara is worthy of being part of your major make-up wardrobe.  If you're loving Lash Blast, you'll love superShock.  It's cheaper, too!  How's that for cool?  Cheaper than a drugstore mascara and works just as well as a high-priced product.

You can buy Avon superShock Mascara on http://shop.avon.com or contact your local Avon representative.  superShock Mascara retails for $4.99 and is available in Black, Brown, Brown/Black and Navy.

Product review: Rimmel Sweet Jelly

Rimmel_sweet_jelly During a trip to Walgreen's this week, I came upon Rimmel Sweet Jelly lipgloss.  I figured, hey ... it only cost $3.99, why not try it?

I got four shades: a nude, a light peach, a dark peachy-pink and a hot pink.  I am really liking these!  They remind me of MAC's Ligeleés in that they are sheer with no stickiness.  Admittedly, the texture isn't as plush as a Lipgeleé and you do have to reapply ever hour or two, but for $3.99, who's complaining?

I have a peachy bronze glow!

Physicians_formula_waikiki_strip Physicians Formula has the most impressive range of bronzers I've ever seen and all are delightfully designed to make you feel luxurious when you use them.  Having tried a few, I have fallen in love with the new Shimmer Strips.  I currently have Waikiki Strip in heavy rotation, having used it as bronzer and eyeshadow.  Physicians Formula offers several more shades in the Shimmer Strips line and I've found them to be just as good as Bobbi Brown Shimmerbricks - and only $11.95.  Nice.

Beauty for a Bargain: The List

Okay, I know this blog is mostly about all things beauty, where to get them, how to wear them, etc., but I realize that most people aren't going to have as large a collection of beauty items as I have, nor are they going to put the time and effort into trying every conceivable beauty line on the planet, like I try to.  I also fully understand that one of the benefits of being a beauty blogger is that I get samples of products that I'd never be able to afford otherwise.  So, in recognition of all you out there who don't want to or can't afford to shop the higher-end beauty brands, I put together a list of products that will make you look and feel your most beautiful, without breaking the bank.

Skincare

Cleansers: Purpose Gentle Cleanser and Cetaphil Daily Cleanser.  You can find either of these products at your nearest drugstore - I usually get mine from Walgreen's.  Even if I could afford pocketbook busting cleansers, I would still stick with these.  They are extremely gentle, which is great for me, since I have a sensitive face that tends to break out if I'm not careful.  Purpose only costs $5.99 and I believe the biggest container of Cetaphil cleanser costs about $11.99 and it will last for months!  These cleansers will remove dirt, oil and make-up as well as their more expensive counterparts without causing problems for those with more sensitive skin.

Toners: Yes, I know, toner isn't a necessary step in one's cleansing ritual, but because I have oily skin and wear make-up every day, I like it as an additional bit of cleansing.  I like the fresh feeling it leaves afterward and that it removes any last little bits of make-up, oil or dirt.  The only toners worth using contain no alcohol, so my favorite is Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner.  It leaves my skin feeling clean and fresh without any tightness caused by overdrying.  If you're into more natural products, simple rosewater or cucumber water work, too.  They can usually be found in more organic stores or you can make them at home.

Acne Treatment: For my occasional breakouts (mostly around the time I'm riding the Crimson Tide), I use Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment.  Greatest stuff ever and you can buy it at the drugstore or the supermarket.  A touch of it morning and night ... and zits are gone!  I actually put it on the zit-prone portions of my face every day, whether I have a bump or not - it seems to keep them at bay.  I also carry a tube of Neutrogena On The Spot in my make-up bag - the Tinted version is just deep enough to cover the redness of a new pimple and works to eliminate it.

Moisturizers: As you all know, you MUST wear a moisturizer (or other product) with sunscreen every day, so my top two choices in this category are Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15 - this works great to moisturize and provide sun protection without causing my face to look like an oil slick by the end of the day - and Dove Facial Lotion SPF 15 - this would work better for someone with drier skin as it's a bit thicker.

Mask: Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque is the best out there!  Exceedingly affordable and works wonders - if I'm having an oil crisis or have been breaking out more than usual, applying this mask clears that all up!  It smells yummy and feels luxurious going on, particularly if you apply it to your face with a brush, the way they apply masks in a salon.

Scrub: The gentlest I've found and the best is Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub.  It's gentle enough to be used as a daily cleanser, but works well as an exfoliator.  It rinses away cleanly, as well, much better than other scrubs I've tried.

Make-up

Foundation: The affordable brand that most suits me is L'Oreal True Match.  It comes in both Super-Blendable Liquid and Super-Blendable Powder.  It has the widest complexion range I've seen among the drugstore brands and they work as well as MAC or any other brands I've tried.  They stay in my make-up rotation.  If you're into mineral make-up, L'Oreal Bare Naturale isn't bad, but I have to warn you that the complexion range isn't very wide, so it won't be appropriate for those of a darker hue.  I've heard many women of color rave about the Cover Girl Queen collection, but I didn't find it to be all that awesome.  Of course, your mileage may vary.

Concealer: Once again, L'Oreal True Match is at the top of the heap, in my opinion.  It comes in a range of shades and in Warm, Cool and Neutral tones, just like the foundation.

Mascara: There are many great drugstore varieties of mascara.  My favorites are CoverGirl Fantastic Lash, CoverGirl Lash Exact, L'Oreal Volume Shocking, MAX Factor 2000 Calories.  The only one I avoid is Maybelline Great Lash - I have no idea how that became the #1 seller in the country - I've always found it to be awful.

Eyeshadow: If you're looking for a wide range of colors and the lastest trends, look no further than NYX.  I've never seen this brand at a drugstore, but if you have a beauty supply store nearby, you should be able to find it there.  The shadows come in duos, trios, quads and singles and the color range is enormous.  They work almost as well as MAC shadows.  In fact, I've found that many MAC addicts own quite a few NYX shadows.

Blush: Once again, L'Oreal True Match is great.  You can find a blush that'll work well for your particular skintone.  I also recommend Revlon and Iman, which you can find at your local Target.

Bronzer: Rush right over to the nearest Physicians Formula display!  I have never seen a wider selection of bronzing and shimmer products.  My personal favorites are the Shimmer Strips, particularly Waikiki Strip, which is billed as a "peachy glow bronzer" and can be used as bronzer, blush and eye shadow.  I find it a bit too glowy to be used as a blush, but it is perfect to be used along the cheekbones for added bronzy-ness and shimmer and also works great as a highlighting shadow when applied under the brow.  The Shimmer Strips bronzers are as awesome as Bobbi Brown Shimmerbricks and, at $11.99, much more economical.

Lipstick/lipgloss: I'm more of a gloss girl than a lipstick one, and I've found that Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss is really good - creamy and smooth, without any stickiness.  I'm also a big fan of L'Oreal Colour Juice - they are an exact duplicate of Lancome Juicy Tubes without having that overpowering scent.  If you're a lipstick wearer, I want to steer you in the direction of ... wait for it ... Wet 'N Wild.  Yes, the 99 cent brand!  A large range of color options and you can't get any more affordable.  Rimmel and Revlon also have good lipsticks.

There you are!  This should give you a good list to take with you the next time you go shopping for beauty products!  If you've tried any of these or decide to pick them up, let me know what you think!

I've added calories to my lashes!

Max_factor_2000_calories A few weeks ago, I walked into The Body Shop to purchase some body butter and was helped by a saleswoman with the most beautiful lashes - thick, long and dark.  I kept staring at them and finally had to ask what mascara she used.  She told me that it was MAX Factor 2000 Calories.  She admitted to having loaded on about five coats, but added that it was the best mascara she'd ever used.  I immediately wrote it down in my "shopping journal", and decided to run out and buy some the next day.  Well, wouldn't you know it?  No matter where I looked, I couldn't find any.  And it wasn't just the mascara.  As far as I can see, none of the places in my area are selling any MAX Factor products at all!

I thought I would have to resort to ordering it online, but thank God I joined Makeup Alley!  I managed to snag a brand new one in a swap!  It is awesome.  And I'm flabbergasted, since I don't like MAX Factor products at all!  But this mascara does everything I want it to do - it instantly lengthens, separates and adds tons of volume.  And it's jet black, which I love.  I only use two coats on a daily basis and my lashes look wonderful.  The formula is a bit wet, but once dry, my lashes don't look crunchy or spidery.  If you have MAX Factor in your area, run out and try this, and if you don't, stock up online (or swap for it)!
