CARGO blu-ray lip gloss compact

Cargo_blu_ray_lip_gloss One of my favorite brands, CARGO has put out a new collection designed specifically to look great on high-definition TV.  It's a fun and interesting concept, but how many of us really spend our lives needing to look good on HDTV?  Anyway, sucker that I am, I picked up the blu-ray lip gloss palette and blush/highlighter.

The lip gloss palette comes in four nice colors: sheer versions of peach, plum, rose and beige.  The lip gloss has a great consistency - soft and smooth, with no stickiness.  It has a faint mint flavor/scent that is pleasant.  What I don't see is any difference between these glosses and the ones that CARGO already offered.  I didn't notice a plumping effect or that the gloss is any shinier than another.  If you have reason to be on HDTV, maybe this is something you need to look into.  Otherwise, I find these to be pretty standard glosses.

You can buy the blu-ray lip gloss palette at Sephora or on Sephora.com for $29.

Avon/mark. review

I am so incredibly fortunate that my lovely friend, Yalonda, is an Avon/mark. representative!  As a younger girl, I became enamored with Avon because my grandmother would order from their catalogs - all the products seemed so glamorous to me back then.  Now, I'm falling in love with this company all over again - they're coming up with such fun, innovative products, at such fabulous price points.

Mark_caribbean_shine_lip_gloss The mark caribbean shine lip gloss is really cute and fun!  Look at it - it's like fabulous little tubes of sand art!  I got the peach shade "Soak in the Sun" and the bronzy shade "Walk in the Sand."  I expected that these would go on sheer, but it's not so.  They aren't slap in the face with the color by any means, but the gloss is very creamy on the lips.  I love them both, but particularly "Soak in the Sun."  At $6 a pop, you can afford to get all three, if you want!

Mark_kiss_therapy_lip_balm It's rare that I'm disappointed by Avon or mark, but in this case, I'm a bit disappointed.  The mark kiss therapy lip balm looks like it would be a good alternative to Rosebud Salve and its cohorts, but frankly, this balm pales by comparison.  It comes in great colors which actually add tint to the lips.  Unfortunately, it's sticky as all get out, which I can't stand and it really doesn't feel like balm on the lips at all.  I found that it doesn't relieve dryness much - it's like applying a thick, sticky gloss without moisturizing your lips first.  Not awesome.

Avon_smoldering_pastels_blush_duo I love the look of the Avon Smoldering Pastels Blush Duo.  It's quite a fab little blush.  The idea is that you use the darker outer circle as your blush color and use the light inner shade as a highlight.  That would be a good idea except that the bullseye formation of the blush makes it almost impossible to separate the two colors, at least if you're using the right size blush brush.  I tried to use them separately, but wound up mixing the colors inadvertently.  That wasn't too bad, though, since the resultant color was quite nice - bright enough to be seen on my brown skin, with a touch of glowiness from the highlight color.  Good job, Avon!  This blush is just $6.99 and it comes in the Coral Dream shade (which I got) and a more mauvey color.

You can purchase Avon/mark products on the Avon website or from your local Avon/mark representative.

Shu Uemura Rouge Crystal Shine Lipstick

Shu_uemura_rouge_crystal_shine Well, first of all, I love the packaging of the shu uemura rouge crystal shine lipstick.  It looks of futuristic and cool in its clear plastic bullet.  And I love that you instantly know what the shade is because if you're not familiar with shu uemura's naming practices, you'd be puzzled.  Hint: PK = pink.  LOL!  Yes, I admit I didn't get the naming at first.

Anyway, I'm really liking this lipstick.  I got a pink shade and a beige shade.  This lipstick is quite sheer, which is a great way to try a new color if you're a bit afraid and is a way to get yourself into lipstick if you've always been a gloss kind of girl.  I don't know that I would call this better than any other sheer lipstick I've tried, but it's a good product and a nice one to try if you want to be introduced to the brand or if you're brand loyal.  Note: Both shades I've tried contained quite a bit of frostiness, so if you're not into frost lipsticks you might want to skip these.

You can find shu uemura rouge crystal shine lipstick at www.shuuemura.com.

New for your lips from shu uemura!

Shu_uemura_rouge_crystal_shine_2 Debuting this month is shu uemura Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shine.  This collection of 17 shades is designed to give professional caliber brilliance while moisturizing your lips.

shu's principal makeup artist Jason Hoffman offers some tips on using the product!

For a light, glossy stain, apply directly from the tube.

If you want a slightly heavier shine, use a brush to apply. The brush will pick up more product and blend it evenly on the lips.

For more color depth and long lasting wear, pair the crystal shine with a pencil.  Try to use a pencil that is similar in color and remember to fill in the lips.

crystal shine is also great for eyes and cheeks (liek all of shu's lipsticks).  Use a synthetic foundation brush and apply on the apples of your cheeks.  The shimmer offers a beautiful sheen.  For the eyes, use a synthetic concealer brush.

Every woman should own the shade WH (white) 002S.  It is so versatile!  It can be used alone for a light glossy finish or layered over any lip color.  It will lighten the color and give it a hint of pink shimmer.

The shade BG (beige) 901S is also a must-have for anyone who likes to wear a smoky eye.  It is the perfect beige that compliments browns, purples, greens, blues and black.

100% Pure Cosmetics

100percentpure_lip_and_cheek_tint 100percentpure_lipgloss 100percentpure_mascara

As y'all know, QVC's Saturday Night Beauty holds a prominent place on my TiVo's Season Pass list.  Almost every week, I find a new line or product that I want to try.  I strongly suggest that, if you're as in love with beauty as I am, you watch SNB - it's a great way to find out about new or seldom-known beauty brands.

Week before last, the interesting products were from 100% Pure Cosmetics.  I found myself intrigued by the draw of using fruit pigments to color the products.  I just knew they would smell yummy and I had to have them!  I ordered two lipgloss duos, a lip & cheek stain trio and the mascara in Black Tea and Blackberry.  I'm not an all natural kind of girl, but putting soothing, natural products on my face sounded appealing.

Now I see why I'm not an all natural girl.  I mean, okay, these products don't royally suck or anything, but truthfully, they're just not that interesting.  The Lip & Cheek Stain is an okay product - the texture is quite lovely in its creaminess, but the tint is very faint and it takes me several applications before I feel that it's really showing up.  Not to mention that, halfway through the day, I looked in the mirror an noticed that it had gone a bit blotchy on me.  However, I didn't find that it faded quickly, so that's good.

The lipglosses come in very pretty, natural colors (duh!)   I expected them to glide on smoothly when - shock and awe - I found that they feel kind of gritty on my lips.  I don't know if it's the fruit pigments that do that, but whatever it is, I didn't find it to be a very pleasing experience.  Not to mention that I like my lipglosses to have a shiny finish and this doesn't.  It's decidedly creamy, almost like a liquid lipstick, but with not enough coverage to qualify.

And the mascaras.  Okay, they're not awful.  But they're not great.  They will add some length, but it requires several coats.  In the mornings, I just don't have time for all that.  The mascaras also didn't leave my lashes looking particularly dark or thick.  Thumbs down.  Just a very basic mascara.

ETA: I had my dance mentor, Lotus Niraja, try out the mascaras, as well.  While she likes the color of the Blackberry shade (a dark purple), the texture and overall effect of the mascara did nothing for her lashes.  She found the consistency to be almost oily and was surprised at how stringy her lashes looked after application.  She was pleased to announce, though, that she found they work well for grooming the brows, if you wipe a bit of product off the brush first.

So, to summarize - if you must try this line, go for the Lip & Cheek Stain.

NYX Round Lipstick

Nyx_round_lipstick Y'all!  I have found the best bargain lipstick in the world, thanks to Vanessa from Nessasarymakeup!

NYX Round Lipstick is a fabulous product!  It comes in dozens of marvelous colors, applies smooth and creamy and doesn't wear off quickly.  It's not that it knocks your socks off, it's just that it works beautifully and is the best price I have ever heard of.  Y'all ... these lipsticks are 99 cents.  No, I am not kidding.  99 cents, do you hear me????  I bought it in five colors: Hebe (which I'm wearing today), Chaos, B52, Galaxy, and Rea and I'll be going back for me.

NYX is one of those lines that you will frequently find in the beauty supply stores that run rampant in the 'hood.  The beauty store two doors down from where the NDC rehearses has a pretty good stock of NYX Cosmetics and I am making it my business to try at least one of each product.  This one kicks heinie.

You can find NYX Round Lipstick at your local neighborhood beauty supply store (if you live in the right neighborhood) or at www.cherryculture.com.

MAC Heatherette Collection review

Mac_heatherette The MAC Heatherette collection is for any girl (or boy, for that matter) who love all things glitter and pastel.  When you think Heatherette, think fun, fashion, feminine, flirtatious!  This collection is very cool and very cute, from the packaging to the colors.

In the lipsticks, only Hollywood Nights is bright - it's described as a clean fuschia pink (satin).  It looks like it belongs in the Fafi collection, minus the glitter.  I liked it, but didn't love it.  I was drawn in by Lollipop Loving, though.  It's a fabulous coral, laced with green iridescence - the green doesn't really show up on the lips - it just adds a soft glow.  Fleshpot is a very cute neutral (light neutral beige), but if you have 1N or any of MAC's other neutral lipsticks, I think you can skip it.  Also included is Melrose Mood, a clean pastel pink - just like Fleshpot, you'll be able to find a comparable shade in MAC's permanent collection.

I like the lipglasses much better and scooped them all up.  Bonus Beat - sheer yellow beige with gold pearl (frost) is a good shade to mute a brighter color - when paired with Lollipop Loving, you wind up with a very pretty peachy nude lip.  Sock Hop - soft midtone coral (cream) is a yummy shade that's totally on target for the spring coral lip.  Style Minx - clean fuschia pink - is the lipglass version of Hollywood Nights and I like it better in this glossier formulation.  Starlet Kiss - clean pastel pink - is a very nice pink gloss, but I think it's skippable if you have something similar in your collection already.

The Heatherette collection has two shadow trios: Heatherette Trio 1 - Mood Ring (pastel mint green), Cloud Burst (true black with subtle green pearl), Hoppin' (clean pastel peach), and Heatherette Trio 2 - Baby Petals (pastel pink), V.I.P. (clean mid-tone yellow pink), Cassette (blackened eggplant purple).  Truth be told, both these trios are easily dupable.  You could make Trio 1 with Aquadisiac or Newly Minted, Cloud Burst is a repromote, and Hoppin' is close to Pink Venus.  For Trio 2, again, go for Pink Venus, try Expensive Pink in place of V.I.P. and try Fig. 1 or Nocturnelle in place of Cassette.

The Dual-Edge Eye Pencils are awesome, y'all!  Got 'em all!  Each pencil has one side that's a traditional creamy liner and the other side is glittery and a bit harder to draw on and blend.  Here are the shades: Black Funk/Pop Blue - true black/turquoise with silver glitter, Phone Me/Text Me - charcoal gray/metallic silver with silver glitter, Nighthawk/Front Row - coffee brown/neutral peach with gold glitter, FAB Orchid/Dash Lily - jewel-tone purple/mid-tone lavendar with silver glitter.

Both of the Glitters are repromotes - Reflects Gold and 3D Silver.  Since I already had Reflects Gold, I picked up 3D Silver, which is a gorgeously rainbow-reflective silver glitter.

In Pigments, the Heatherette collection offers Jardin Aires (gilded peach with silver reflect glitter) and Pink Pearl (mid-tone pink with blue reflection).  Jardin Aires is great for a neutral sparkly eye and Pink Pearl is perfect for a brighter look when you're on a night out clubbing.  Or if you're a chick who would wear a bright pink eye during the day, well then ... rock it!

The two Beauty Powders are nice - I've never tried Beauty Powders before.  They're very finely milled and apply sheerly.  Neither Beauty Powder from this collection is awesome for brown girls, in my opinion.  Smooth Harmony would be a great matte bronzer on somebody with lighter skin, but it doesn't show up on you if you're medium brown or darker.  And Alpha Girl (pink with gold nuances) is too light of a pink.

The two nail lacquers are Lola Devine (medium golden bronze) and $$$$$ Yes (metallic silver foil).  Both are great for giving yourself metallic fingers and piggies, but I don't go to MAC to get nail polish.  You definitely can find the same colors for cheaper.

The last fun product in the collection are the lashes: She's Good and She's Bad.  Both have patent finishes, which is the coolest thing ever.

Long story short: this collection is very cool and fun, but the vast majority of it can be duplicated easily with things that are in MAC's permanent collection.  So check first to see if you have similar shades, okay?

Look for some Heatherette FOTDs soon!

tarte health couture collection

Tarte_health_couture tarte was gracious enough to send me their new spring line, Health Couture.  Except for the infinite glow bestsellers palette, I got to try all of the new products.  (I previously have tried one of the products in the palette, the park ave. princess bronzer, and I love it!)

The collection includes four shades of the new double dose berry boost & gloss.  That is a mouthful of name, but this is a nice gloss.  According to the website, these glosses contain a "t5 super fruit complex concentrated pigment", which mixes with the clear gloss component to achieve a shiny lip color.  The t5 super fruit complex is a blend of goji, acai, maracuja, acerola and pomegranate.  Admittedly, I've only ever heard of goji, acai and pomegranate, but the five fruit complex made me think this gloss would smell deliciously fruity, similar to the Inside Out glosses of last year.  I was surprised to find that they smell decidedly minty, then discovered that the glosses also contain peppermint oil, which supposedly soothes lips.  From all that I've read and experienced, though, peppermint isn't all that soothing to the lips.  When you apply this gloss, you get a cooling sensation on your lips, which made me think that it's supposed to be a plumper, but I think that's just the peppermint that you feel.  It's not an awful sensation, but be advised.

According to tarte, squeezing the tube from the top gives a sheerer effect and squeezing in the middle offers more pigmented color.  I found the opposite to be true when I tested it out.  However, sheer or more pigmented, the colors are pretty, glossy and faintly shimmery, but not enough to be distracting.  They go on smoothly and wear nicely.  However, I do have to say that they feel a bit sticky on the lips, so if you have a texture issue, be on the lookout for that.  These glosses put me in mind of Maybelline's Shinylicious glosses, so if you like those, you'll like these.

The glosses cost $21 a piece, which I find to be a bit steep, however, if you're environmentally and socially minded, be aware that every purchase of the gloss helps to preserve the Amazon Rainforest through forest conservation, improved living conditions and educational opportunities for communities in Brazil.  tarte supports Sambazon's Sustainable Acai Project (SAP), which is a member of the Organic Trade Association and the Fair Trade Federation.  (And, on a personal note, one of my friends works for Sambazon, so it makes me feel warm and fuzzy when I buy a tarte product because I feel like I'm contributing to their cause - and I look pretty, of course - LOL!)

The gloss comes in acai boost: sparkling raspberry (which I'm wearing today - I'll post a tarte FOTD later), acerola rush: sparkling golden peach, go go goji: sparkling blush, and pomegranate punch: sparkling red delicious.

Also offered is the rejuvelash declumping lash exhilarator.  I have to say - I'm not sure I get the point of this product.  You're supposed to use it before applying your mascara or as a mid-day mascara refresher (which I've never needed before, honestly).  It supposedly protects from brittleness and breakage.  I'm not sure whether it does or not.  However, I didn't find that using it before my mascara made my mascara look any different and I didn't want to put it on during the day, for fear of smearing the mascara I was wearing already.  Just don't get this.

I do get the lock & roll creaseless eyeshadow duos, though!  I like them a lot.  tarte has realized what all we beauty aficionadas have known for a long time - applying a cream shadow first and then powder shadow on top makes the color much more vibrant, as well as allows it to wear much longer.  Kudos to tarte for putting both forms of shadow in a slim, easy to carry package.  Each of the shades is a soft metallic, which is right on-trend for this season.  I followed the instructions and brushed on a sheer layer of the cream shadow, waited for it to dry, then rolled on the matching loose powder.  I was wowed by how much the color popped on my eyes, and, after wearing it since about 7 this morning, working all day, walking through the rain, and sweating during a workout, it's still there!  It has faded slightly, but no creasing and it's still clearly visible - good job, tarte!  According to the website, several of the shades are out of stock, so try Sephora for this good buy!  They are $17 a piece, but I think that's reasonable for what amounts to two shadows.

And, finally, the full blossom cheekstain.  I think I've already reviewed this (I know I've reviewed cheekstains before), but, suffice it to say, I love it.  It goes on smoothly, blends easily with your fingers and lasts for hours.  It's a natural flush, instead of a bright slap-in-the-face sort of color.  cheekstains are $28, but they last forever, as long as you don't get them really hot (then they get all melty ... ew!).

You can buy the collection in Sephora stores, at Sephora online or on www.tartecosmetics.com.
